ITV apologise over Brundle’s ‘pikey’ remark

ITV commentator Martin Brundle is under fire for a remark he made during the Canadian Grand Prix.

The former F1 driver was interviewing Bernie Ecclestone on his ‘grid walk’ before the race and asked the F1 chief, “There are some pikeys there at Turn 10 putting tarmac down – what do you think of that?”

No-one appeared to think anything of the comment at the time, but last night the UK’s racial equality watchdog condemned Brundle’s choice of words. According to British newspaper The Daily Mail, a spokesperson for the Equality and Human Rights Commission said, “This word has been used on television in the past and is highly derogatory. They have caused much offence in the past.”

ITV have apologised for their commentator’s gaffe but have said that it was too early to say whether they would receive any complaints over Brundle’s remark.
