No penalty for first engine change of the season
It has been reported that F1 teams will no longer suffer a penalty for the first engine change of the season. In recent times, an engine change during practice sessions has resulted in a 10-place grid slot penalty, or an engine change after qualifying results in the driver starting from the back of the grid.
However, following a meeting of team principals earlier in the month, it was agreed that the first engine change of the season would no longer attract a penalty.
Currently, the minor rule tweak has not yet been approved – the proposal still needs to be formally approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council – however with all the team principals backing the idea, it is expected that the rule tweak will be voted in.
