KERS 2011 return looking more likely

The Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) looks set to return to Formula One for next season with it emerging that teams have provisionally agreed to allow work to be carried out on the technology.

Autosport reports that the subject was brought up at the Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA) meeting in the Spain, where it was agreed that the return of KERS would not be blocked if certain performance and cost targets were met.

The same source also states that teams would be given a free choice over which system they use, therefore ruling out a standardised device, with the championship’s independent entrants allowed to buy the system from a manufacturer or from an independent supplier.

Although KERS is not banned in the sport’s technical regulations, each member of FOTA agreed to not run the system for 2010.
