Analysis: The day F1 went tabloid

The incidents at Barcelona a fortnight ago in which a small minority of Spanish fans hurled racist abuse at Lewis Hamilton caused a media backlash in the British press and led the FIA to introduce a new global anti-racism campaign. Raikkonen fastest ‘again’ in Groundhog Day Test!

Raikkonen once again topped the timesheets on the penultimate day of testing in Bahrain, forcing some commentators to question whether they had been dropped into the film Groundhog Day, where the lead actor Bill Murray was forced to relive the same day over and over again until he became a better person! The World Champion set a time of 1:30.015 around the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, two tenths faster than team-mate Felipe Massa, and almost one second ahead of the lead Toyota of Jarno Trulli.

Raikkonen Flying in Bahrain Test

Kimi Raikkonen again topped the timesheets as testing continued in Bahrain after a two day break. Raikkonen was quickest of the Ferraris, completing a total of 66 laps on day four of the test. His team-mate, Felipe Massa, managed 53 laps until a hydraulics issue ended his test mid-afternoon.

Kovalainen: Testing Performance down to Fuel Load

After setting the fastest time on the second day of testing in Valencia yesterday, Heikki Kovalainen has conceded that his car was running on low fuel loads. Times recorded during testing are not always a sign of true race pace - but the Finn’s performance, 0.6 seconds ahead of the Ferraris and over one second ahead of his team-mate, Lewis Hamilton, had a number of journalists talking.

Kovalainen fastest on second day of Valencia F1 Test

Heikki Kovalainen topped the timesheets on the second day of testing at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Spain. The Finn secured the position with an unofficial time of one minute, eleven seconds exactly.

Jerez Testing - Day 3 Round-up

On the final day of this week’s testing at Jerez, Timo Glock in Toyota’s new TF108 topped the timesheet on a damp day. Glock managed 96 laps of the track and also caused a red flag late on in the day when he ran off the track. His time was a full three tenths quicker than Lewis Hamilton in the new MP4-23.

On his return to the Renault team, Fernando Alonso has impressed, topping the timesheets on day two of testing at Jerez.

The Spanish driver took to the track in last year’s Renault F1 car, the R27, eventually putting in a best time of 1:19.503 in the late afternoon. His time was just one tenth ahead of the McLaren of Pedro de la Rosa, with Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari just five hundredths further down.

Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa have thrown down the gauntlet and dominated the first day of testing at Jerez. De la Rosa came in third in the new McLaren MP4-23, with Sebastien Vettel fourth in his Toro Rosso, and the second McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen finishing in fifth spot.

Barcelona Testing - Day 3 Round-Up

Ferrari continued their dominance at the Barcelona test sessions with Felipe Massa emerging top of the timesheets on the final day of testing. Massa’s fastest lap was 1:21.044, 0.3 seconds quicker than his mentor’s Michael Schumacher’s previous day’s quickest lap.

Honda impressed with GP2 trio

Honda’s sporting director Ron Meadows has been so impressed with the three GP2 drivers who tested for the team this week that he has decided to give all three a second test at Jerez next month.
