Franz Tost, boss of Scuderia Toro Rosso, has urged his two race drivers to start improving their performances so that the team can win some points this season.
Bernie Ecclestone is a little baffled as to why Dietrich Mateschitz feels the need to own two Formula 1 teams. Mateschitz owns Red Bull Racing. At the end of 2005, he also bought Minardi and rebranded it as Toro Rosso before selling a 50% share to fellow countryman and ex-Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger.
Toro Rosso have changed the way they paint their cars to try and improve their aerodynamic efficiency. One of the key changes is that stickers will now no longer be used on the body of the car - in particular, the large red bull on the front engine cover. Stickers will now be painted on instead, a change which will the team are hoping will have both aerodynamic and weight benefits. If the paintjob does the trick, it won’t be the first time that paint has helped a racing team.
Scuderia Toro Rosso are on the verge of announcing their new Technical Director, Giorgio Ascanelli. Ascanelli has been drafted in to replace the current technical chief, Alex Hitzinger. Hitzinger will be leaving the STR team and moving to sister team, Red Bull, where he will be in charge of the new energy recovery systems which are set to be introduced into F1 from next season.
Spyker lodged an official complaint about the cars of the Super Aguri Team, after they jumped from back markers last season, to solid midfielders in Australia earlier today. However the Stewards at Albert Park dismissed the protest saying it was a commercial issue, not the responsibilty of the FIA.
American Scott Speed has retained his STR seat for the up and coming season and will team up with Viantonio Liuzzi once again. The future surrounding the 24-year-old through Winter testing was seriously in doubt with canditates lining up for the seat, including former Spyker driver Tiago Monteiro, Champ Car Champion Sébastien Bourdais and even Mika Hakkinen, who won the Drivers title back in 1998 and 1999.
Scuderia Toro Rosso’s boss Gerhard Berger has admitted that he has doubts over Scott Speed’s commitment to Formula 1, and this is the reason that he has yet to announce who the second driver for the 2007 season will be. Vinantonio Liuzzi has already been confirmed as the first of their drivers, but Toro Rosso said that due to ‘contractual issues’, Speed has yet to be confirmed as the second driver.
